“Signor Presidente della Repubblica, Autorità, Signore e Signori: sono molto felice di dirigere anche questo anno il sette dicembre alla Scala, sono molto onorato di essere stato dichiarato Maestro Scaligero. Per tale titolo, ma anche in nome di tutti i miei colleghi che suonano, cantano, ballano, e lavorano non soltanto in questo magnifico teatro, ma in tutti i teatri di Italia per dirvi a qual punto siamo profondamente preoccupati per il futuro della cultura in nostro paese e in Europa, e si me permitete, vorrei che ricordiamo insieme il articolo 9 della Costituzione Italiana: La Repubblica promuove lo sviluppo della cultura e la ricerca scientifica e tecnica. Tutela il paesaggio e il patrimonio storico e Artistico della Nazione!”

To that end, but also on behalf of all my colleagues who play, sing, dance, and work not only in this magnificent theater, but in all theaters of Italy to tell to what extent we are deeply concerned about the future of culture in our country and in Europe, and permit me, I would like to remind all that the Article 9 of the Italian Constitution: The Republic promotes the development of culture and scientific and technical research. Protecting the landscape and the historical and artistic heritage of the Nation!”
