The voice is a miracle. The rhythm to set your watch with, the improvisation to rival the early castrati. I have emotional catharsis listening to this historic and great vocal phenomena.The one and only, Mahalia Jackson. The inner melody of this voice and her refined sense of freedom has always proved a revelation to me. My personal favorites are as follows…..Mahalia Jackson sings “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho” (traditional) ….. A real example of improvisation unrivaled by anyone.
