“Tis a far far better thing I do now”

Will Crutchfield

Mine was simple: seeing my dad go into rehearsals and become, for a few hours, not my dad, but Rodolfo or Alfredo or Don Jose — when you’re a little kid and your imagination is running wild, it’s unforgettable to learn that adults can have this place where they go and live out their imaginations. Or other people’s imaginations. So I was marked for life from a very early age — even though I went through the motions of preparing for law school, and believed at the time that I meant it, there was really no chance of NOT going back to live in the world that was shown to me so forcefully when I was still in grade-school.

I still know all the children’s chorus lines to every standard opera in Ruth and Thomas Martin’s English, by the way.
